While most golfers spend July and August huddled around the heater waiting for the spring thaw, a select few are out on the fairways, playing through frosty mornings, soggy lies, and biting southerly winds. This month, we are shining a spotlight on one of our most dedicated regulars: the local club stalwart who never let the plunging temperatures ruin their tee time.

Meet Ken

Ken brought his elite athlete mindset to the fairways this winter, achieving an astonishing transformation on the course. Starting the cooler months as an 18 handicap, Ken put his head down, locked into a rigorous routine, and slashed his mark all the way down to a stellar 3.3.

Now, with a disciplined approach and three range sessions packed into every week, he is rapidly closing in on a scratch handicap.

The Winter Grind Pays Off

Coming from a professional cycling background, bad weather and cold mornings are nothing new to Ken. When asked what kept him motivated to walk the course and stick to his routine right through the coldest winter days, Ken credits his athlete discipline:

“Coming from cycling, I’m pretty used to training in bad weather, you make the biggest gains when everyone else stays inside. Having Riverside right around the corner made it easy to stick to my three sessions a week. Once you start seeing your scores drop and feel your gear working for you, motivation isn't an issue, cold or not.”

Locking in Repeatable Mechanics

While most players let their touch rust over the off-season, Ken used the quiet winter fairways to make massive strides in his approach and short game, he shares,

“My touch around the greens and confidence on the putter. Dropping 15 strokes wasn't about hitting it further; it was about locking in repeatable mechanics. Dialing in my irons with weekly winter reps gave me the muscle memory to shoot near-par rounds while most players were letting their feel rust.”

Ken’s massive handicap drop is a masterclass in what happens when dedication meets consistency. Next time you see Ken out on the range fine-tuning his iron play or walking the fairways at Riverside, be sure to give him a nod and congratulate him on an absolute killer winter season!
